What reader comments has taught me about breeding data

Writing about genetics and cattle breeding in Beerf Central usually generates a range of opinions. A few of my recent articles on fertility, selection indexes and breeding for more difficult environments have been no exception.

Some comments strongly support objective data. Others question whether breeding values and indexes deliver what producers are promised. There are also producers who see value in the figures but remain wary of relying on them too heavily.

It would be easy to describe this as a debate between people who believe in the data and those who don’t. After reading the responses more closely, I don’t think it is that simple.

Most producers are asking practical questions:

  • Will these cattle conceive, grow, survive and produce a saleable animal in my environment

  • Will their daughters remain productive? Will the steers and cull females meet market specifications?

  • Most importantly, will using this information leave the business better off?

Those are reasonable questions.

Profit is more than one trait

A recurring concern is that selecting strongly for one trait may come at the expense of something else.

Improving reproductive performance can increase the number of calves available to sell, but fertility is not the only influence on profit. Sale weight, carcase value, mature cow size, survival, feed requirements and the value of surplus females can all matter.

The importance of each trait will also vary between businesses. A breeder producing cattle for live export has a different objective from one retaining ownership through a feedlot or supplying a particular carcase market.

This is why statements such as “fertility is the most important trait” or “the highest-index animal will be the most profitable” need context.

A selection index ranks animals for a defined production system using a particular set of biological and economic assumptions. If those assumptions broadly reflect your herd and market, the index can be a valuable way of balancing several traits. If they don’t, the ranking may be less relevant to your breeding objective.

The important question isn’t whether an animal has a high index. It’s whether the index describes the production system you are trying to improve.

Nutrition and genetics are not alternatives

Another common argument is that nutrition has a greater influence on performance than genetics.

Nutrition undoubtedly sets a limit on what cattle can achieve. Poor nutrition can delay puberty, reduce conception, lower growth and prevent animals from expressing their genetic potential.

However, that does not mean genetic differences disappear.

Even when cattle are run together under comparable nutrition and management, some reach puberty earlier, rebreed sooner, maintain body condition more effectively or produce heavier progeny. Part of that difference is genetic.

Management influences whether cattle can perform. Genetics influences the level and type of performance possible within that environment.

Producers therefore do not have to choose between improving nutrition and improving genetics. In most herds, both need attention.

The eye still matters

Some of the strongest comments defend the value of visual appraisal and experience. I agree that neither should be discarded.

Structural soundness, temperament, maturity pattern and suitability for the environment still need to be assessed by looking at the animal. An EBV cannot tell you whether you like the bull standing in front of you or whether he is physically suitable for the job.

However, visual appraisal also has limits.

The bull’s appearance reflects his genetics as well as his age, nutrition, preparation, health and management. Looking at him cannot fully separate those effects or reveal all the genetic differences that may appear in his progeny.

Objective information helps answer a different question: what differences are these animals likely to pass on?

The most useful approach is not the eye versus the figures. It is using the eye and the figures together, with each providing information the other cannot.

The figures are not guarantees

Objective data can also be used poorly.

An EBV is an estimate of genetic merit, not a guarantee of an individual result. Accuracy varies according to the amount and quality of information available. Contemporary groups, pedigree, genomic information and the recording of relevant traits all influence the strength of the estimate.

Indexes also do not remove the need to look at the traits underneath them. Two bulls can achieve similar index values through very different combinations of fertility, growth, carcase and mature cow traits.

That is why producers should not start and finish with the headline number.

Before purchasing a bull, it is worth asking:

  • What am I trying to change in my herd?

  • Which traits are limiting performance or profitability?

  • Does this index reflect my production system and market?

  • What genetic change is this bull likely to create in his progeny?

  • Are there traits I need to hold steady while improving others?

  • Is the bull physically suitable for the females, country and joining conditions?

The data should help answer those questions. It should not replace them.

Evidence still needs to be tested

Comments questioning the economic benefit of a trait or index should not automatically be dismissed as opposition to science. Claims about profitability should be supported by assumptions that producers can see and test against their own circumstances.

At the same time, personal experience with one bull, one herd or one season is not enough to disprove a genetic evaluation. Individual outcomes are affected by many things, including nutrition, joining management, disease, female fertility and seasonal conditions.

Commercial experience is important, but it becomes much more useful when it is supported by records collected across enough animals and years to separate a repeatable result from a single experience.

Both the model and the anecdote should be open to examination.

Comments are not the whole industry

A comments section is not an industry survey. A small number of regular contributors can create the impression that a view is more widespread than it actually is, while producers who agree—or simply have no desire to argue online—often remain silent.

Even so, the comments are worth reading.

They highlight where the explanation has been inadequate, where claims appear too broad and where producers see a gap between the promised outcome and their commercial experience.

My main lesson is that producers do not need to accept breeding information without question. They do need enough understanding to question it well.

That means knowing what the figures describe, what assumptions sit behind them, where their limitations lie and how they relate to the cattle, environment and markets of an individual business.

Objective data is most valuable when it helps producers make better-informed decisions—not when it is treated as a substitute for experience, observation or a clearly defined breeding objective.
